Sleep Apnea Treatment
Although obesity is only one factor that increases the odds of developing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), it may be the primary factor accounting for the current boom in Apnea cases in the US. Many people with Apnea are unaware of the fact because, well, it happens when you are asleep. Even if it does cause you to stop breathing altogether for a brief period, that may not be enough to wake you up.
Apnea is caused when loose tissues hanging in the throat obstruct the airway during sleep. Treatments can range from surgical to mechanical to weight loss or a combination.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is not to be taken lightly, as it can kill directly, by asphyxiation or indirectly through heart failure, high blood pressure, erratic driving, impaired judgement, etc. In fact, Apnea has been linked to increased incidence of several autoimmune diseases – amyotropic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Hashimoto thyroiditis, psoriasis, and myasthenia gravis as well as Adult Onset Diabetes, Gout and stroke.

- awakening not rested in the morning
- abnormal daytime sleepiness, including falling asleep at inappropriate times

- limited attention
